A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions. You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.
The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.
My test tracked 3 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:
Would you break a cat's leg if it were that if you break the cat's leg a child in a third world country would be fed?
What about multiple cats for multiple kids?
Is there a point at which the cat to kid ratio makes the breaking of cats legs too much for kids food? (i.e. one million cats legs for one kid)
So there is a little bit of back story to this post: Last year we found a cat with a broken leg, it was soon discovered that this cat would need surgery to be healed. The cat was taken in front of assembly, and the student body was asked to raise the $300 for the cat. This was completed in 1-2 weeks.
Through certain circumstances... the cat didn't need the cash afterall, so the decision was made to donate the money to an organization that feeds kids from 3rd world countries.
The problem is... had we simply gone in from of assembly and said "there are starving children in Africa, please donate" we would have gotten squat...okay maybe not squat, but as close to squat as you can get without actually squating.
This same problem can be seen when watching a movie... think about it, in action movies people die all the time, we celebrate thier deaths and laud the hero for completing a particularly grotesque and pain kill. Oh, but if our idols, our pets, are endangered in a movie, everyone cries out "Oh horror, don't kill the cute little doggie!" And at the end of movies, where are the notifications that say "No human was harmed during the making of this film" THEY DONT EXIST!!
I am certainly guilty of this too... true I don't freak out during Old Yeller, but I pursue the latest technology like its chocolate pie, all at the expense of millions of kids starving on the streets, and even more so millions of people who don't have access to the Bible, or millions of people who drink dirty water that they have to carry on their backs everyday.
Are we ready to put away our idols, to realize the sanctity of human life? Are we ready to put down our PowerBooks and our iPods, our 64-bit dual core AMD 4400 processor? How about our morning coffee from starbucks, or caribou.
well, school is back in full swing and the 4 classes that I had to day should be (mostly) enjoyable. There will be a small issue of waking up for my 8 o clock since if i miss it three times he starts taking points off... here's hoping. i have almost no classes tommorow on Friday and very few on Monday wednesday...thats right, I refuse to change my terminology, thus, the so-called Monday-thursday classes will heretofore be refered to as monday wednesday...who knows, I might even go REALLY old-school and call them monday wednesday friday classes.
